About Whitby

"Best Seaside Resort 2006", Which? Holiday .

Whitby, the popular British seaside resort, is situated within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and is the perfect destination for those interested in discovering the historic town and its busy harbour and sandy beach, or for those who wish to spend their days trekking along the green trails through the Moors. Based at the mouth of the river Esk, Whitby has a strong history of shipbuilding and whaling, and the harbour has always been a central point of Whitby. The town quickly grew around it.

There is an extensive list of sights, activities and tourist attractions to fill your day in Whitby. For example, you could start your day with a walk along Whitby's sandy beach before heading for a wander around the beautiful little shops Whitby has to offer. After lunch, you may fancy leaving dry land and taking one of the boat trips which leave regularly from the harbour and are very well priced. The 199 steps up to the Abbey could be next on the list before having a game of crazy golf on West Cliff. You couldn't fit everything Whitby has to offer into one day. Whitby has many fantastic places to eat for a variety of different taste buds but is renowned for it's Fish and Chips, many of it's restaurants winning awards. Zed and Emma will be more than happy to offer you recommendations. Dracula tours take place some evenings unless you fancy a peaceful walk along the Pier to watch Whitby's beautiful sunset over the sea.

Today, with links to Europe, especially Scandinavian countries, the harbour is still a busy working environment, and is popular with fishing boats bringing fresh fish daily to the area. Whitby boasts many exciting events throughout the year, including Regatta, Folk Week and the bi-annual Gothic weekend, among many others.
