So … the clocks have gone back; the sun doesn’t rise until after 8am; and it’s cold! Why on earth would you want to have a short break during the winter here in Whitby?

Well, there is something magical about our beautiful town and the surrounding area when it's ‘out of season’. While the daylight hours are short, the soft winter light shows the town and countryside at its wintry best.

During the summer, the bustle of the town is fun and exciting. Yet the calmness of a winter morning is both restorative and soothing, perfect for a peaceful winter holiday on the Yorkshire Coast. While some attractions may close for the low season, Whitby’s shops provide some elegant and bespoke shopping ideas. The many cafes and restaurants in the town offer warming stews, soups and other goodies for some tasty comfort food.

And you can burn off any excess calories with a bracing winter walk along the cliff tops, watching the ‘white horses’ roll in from the boisterous North Sea.

Then, for the evening, you can make the most of cosy evenings with the curtains firmly closed and a nice glass of mulled wine to warm you through.

Far from closing ‘the box office’ for the winter, there are some excellent events taking place in the town throughout the winter. From a classical ballet to a winter film and from a masquerade ball to a blockbuster movie, there’s something for just about everyone! See our 'What's On' guide by clicking here!

Of course, one of the main advantages of joining us here at the Riviera for a winter break is that our tariffs are operating on the winter rate and our hearty breakfast seems even tastier in the keen winter air!

We ourselves have a winter rest, ‘hibernating’ for three weeks in the run-up to Christmas. This gives us chance to visit our own families, friends and of course have quality time with each other before the New Year begins.

One of the best parts of taking time off at this time of year is that Christmas looms large! This year we’re taking part in the tradition of Advent Books, something that has intrigued the younger members of team Riviera. This involves reading a different Christmas book on each day of Advent, just adding to the magic of the festive period.

We also have our own Elf of the Shelf … we just wonder how many elves Santa really needs!

As a family we’ll also be getting out those winter coats, wrapping ourselves up with woolly scarves and finding time for some serious snuggling as we light our Christmas candles.

So if you've been inspired by the cold season, book your winter break with us now! We’re open from Wednesday 27th December 2017 in time for New Year.

Oh, and in case we forget to say – may we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
